1What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple mathematical formula used to estimate body fat based on a person's weight and height. It is widely used by healthcare professionals as a quick screening tool to categorize individuals into different weight classes, such as underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity. While it doesn't directly measure body fat, it provides a reliable indicator for most people.
2How is BMI Calculated?
The BMI calculation is quite straightforward. It divides your weight by the square of your height. The formulas differ slightly depending on whether you use the metric or imperial system:
Metric Formula
Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]²Imperial Formula
(Weight (lbs) ÷ [Height (in)]²) × 7033BMI Categories and Health Implications
| Category | BMI Range |
|---|---|
| Underweight | Below 18.5 |
| Healthy Weight | 18.5 - 24.9 |
| Overweight | 25.0 - 29.9 |
| Obesity | 30.0+ |
Note: BMI does not diagnose the body fatness or health of an individual. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI without having high body fat.
